Title: New Relic / ServiceNow Engineer - SQL Monitoring
Location: Spring TX – Only local
Mode: Onsite
Experience: 5+ Years
Position Summary We’re seeking a focused New Relic / ServiceNow Engineer to design, build and operate a robust SQL Server monitoring solution in New Relic, replacing the current SCOM-based approach. This role will deliver accurate, timely incidents and telemetry into ServiceNow to enable efficient Operations DBA workflows, historical analytics, root-cause investigations, and management scorecards. The initial project is SQL-only and targets delivery within ~3 months with appropriate resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement end-to-end SQL Server monitoring in New Relic, including s, dashboards, and synthetic checks as required.
- Integrate New Relic s/events with ServiceNow to create high-quality incidents with correct CI association, priority, enrichment, and routing.
- Capture and deliver monitoring data that supports Operations DBA efficiency, historical analytics, root-cause analysis, and an Operations Scorecard.
- Replace SCOM for SQL monitoring: perform map/gap analysis against existing SCOM rules to ensure equivalent or improved coverage, and support SCOM decommissioning.
- Ingest only SQL-relevant SolarWinds/Nagios checks (CPU/memory, disk free, SQL service status) into the consolidated monitoring solution.
- Define, document and enforce monitoring requirements, SLAs, and operational processes for each monitoring event.
- Build, test, and validate logic, deduplication, escalation paths, and ServiceNow CI assignments; perform end-to-end system testing.
- Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures, and implement continuous improvements.
- Produce runbooks, documentation, and handoff materials; participate in knowledge transfer and on-call rotations as needed.
Required Qualifications
- 3–6+ years hands-on experience with New Relic (APM/Infrastructure/NRQL/dashboards/s) and practical experience monitoring SQL Server.
- ServiceNow integration experience (Incident/CMDB, Flow Designer/Workflows, REST APIs, IntegrationHub or scripted integrations).
- Solid SQL Server administration or developer background (performance metrics, services, storage, and common failure modes).
- API/scripting skills (JavaScript, PowerShell, etc.) for integration, enrichment, and automation.
- Experience performing requirements gathering, map/gap analysis, and documenting SLAs/processes.
- Proven troubleshooting and testing skills — able to validate accuracy and CI mapping in ServiceNow.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; able to work across infrastructure, DBA, and ServiceNow support teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience replacing or migrating from SCOM to a modern observability platform.
- ServiceNow certifications and/or New Relic certifications.
- Experience with CMDB models and Configuration Item mapping for databases.
- Familiarity with SolarWinds/Nagios checks and methods to selectively migrate SQL-related metrics.
Project Context & Expectations
- Scope: SQL platform only. Deliver comprehensive requirements, develop New Relic monitoring, integrate with ServiceNow, and support SCOM retirement.
- Timeline: Target ~3 months with right resource levels and coordination with dependent teams.
- Dependencies: All SQL servers must have New Relic agents installed/upgraded. Cooperation with DB, Linux, and other teams is required.
- Risks: Partial New Relic coverage or inconsistent installations; reliance on other teams; resource availability.
Team & Collaboration
- This role will collaborate closely with a Lead Systems Analyst (project lead/PM/testing) and may be paired with a second New Relic Engineer if needed to cover all required skills.
- You will be expected to produce documentation, runbooks, and to support knowledge transfer to the Operations DBA team.
